Work Day – September 18 – 9:00 am

Saturday, September 18 is a scheduled work day for the 7 ¼ gauge railroad. We will be working on track installation and ballast.

Work day is 9:00 am to approximately noon at the Amherst Railway Society clubhouse in Palmer, Massachusetts.

A miniature railroad

The Amherst Railway Society is building a 7 ¼ gauge miniature railroad on the grounds of our clubhouse in Palmer, Massachusetts. The finished railroad will include two loops of track and several side tracks.

The club owns an operating miniature diesel locomotive and several freight cars.

Miniature working steam locomotives appeared in the 1800s when early railroad engineers started building models to demonstrate the practicality of designs intended for full size construction.

By the early 1900s, miniature railroads in several scales gained popularity as additions to large estates, and as attractions in amusement parks in Europe and the United States.
